Lace Boucle Dress

Hey Hey Hey My People!!!!!

It’s been a LOOOOONG time I know. I beg your pardon. If you follow us on Instagram, you might have figured out that I was out of the country for a few days. I’ll have a recap for you – it was a fun trip – I ate good food (but no too much), and saw some wonderful shows.

I meant to schedule posts but I got caught up trying to finish work, and also some clothes. Like the one I’m sharing today – it’s a dress I made for my mum. She doesn’t wear as many dresses as before because, like me, getting the right fit for our upper body/lower body ratio is difficult. Especially with pencil dresses – custom is always better – so lately I’ve started making them for her.

I saw this lovely lace at Mood and I just had to have it for my mum. It reminds me of wool boucle. Instead of lining it, I decided to underline it with some silk. I was so busy thinking about how pretty the fabric was that I didn’t realise I would end up doing A LOT of hand sewing to finish the seams – which meant I actually took the dress with me to finish it  because I only it started a few days before my trip.

When it came to finishing the seams, I didn’t want to do a serger finish, so I bias bound the seams with some silk. The lace had some loft and I didn’t want to overpress the seams to force the seams to lay flat, so I slipstitched the seams to the underlining. That way it didn’t show on the exterior. The sleeves were not underlined.

And that’s it! My mum loved it. I was worried she wouldn’t want it posted before she actually wore the dress but she graciously modeled it so I could share with you all! I can’t wait for her to rock it.

20150323_GaAMumLaceBoucleDress_13I don’t know if my mum wants her face on the interwebs 🙂

On a major note, I hope you had a wonderful Easter weekend. Aside from fun food and hanging out with family, it is always great to celebrate the reason we here are Christians – the death and resurrection of Christ for our salvation.

Have a blessed week!
More to come from Nigeria soon.

    Happy easter!

The fabric is divine o. Underlining is the smart option when the fashion fabric is sheer, that way the “insides stay inside”.

I can’t even imagine the amount of time you spent slip stitching, but seeing how couture-ish the inside of this dress looks, your labour of love for your dear mum was worth it 🙂
